200 young girls attend camogie blitz

Almost 200 girls from eight clubs flocked to Munster Technological University (MTU) for an underage camogie blitz last weekend.

The event was organised by Na Piarsaigh Camogie and Ladies Football Club.

The teams assembled at 9.30am and put on an impressive show on the day despite the warm weather conditions.

Cork camogie goalkeeper Amy Lee, who is a member of Na Piarsaigh Camogie and Ladies Football Club and a graduate of MTU, gave some words of encouragement and, together with her fellow Cork players, presented MTU water bottles to each child who participated in the blitz.

Cork captain Amy O’Connor from St Vincent’s Camogie — who scored 3-7 from 10 shots, including a whirlwind hat-trick in the All-Ireland final this year — was also in attendance with the O’Duffy Cup.

MTU Vice-President of External Affairs, Michael Loftus, said that they were delighted that Na Piarsaigh Camogie and Ladies Football Club selected MTU to host the camogie blitz.

“MTU is deeply committed to working with all communities in our region and we are delighted to support the great work being done to encourage young girls to participate in such a wonderful initiative.”

The chairperson of Na Piarsaigh Camogie and Ladies Football, Trisha Coleman, thanked MTU for hosting the blitz.

“Huge thanks to MTU for hosting the blitz today to give young girls the opportunity to play in their fantastic facilities.

“I’m delighted with our own coaches who showed initiative to organise the event and it is a testament to the great work and commitment they show every week.”

Participating teams on the day included the organising club, Na Piarsaigh Camogie and Ladies Football, St Vincent’s Camogie, Blarney, Nemo Rangers, Watergrasshill, St Finbarr’s, Midleton, and Bishopstown.
