RESIDENTS in the small East Cork village of Ballinacurra awoke to smoke and sirens today as a blaze tore through an old mill in the early hours the morning.

The alarm was raised at 3.30am with 11 units from Midleton, Youghal, Cobh, Kanturk and Cork City stations dispatched to the scene.

More 30 firefighters worked overnight to tame the blaze, which destroyed much of the roof of the building. Hydraulic platforms were mobilised to allow officers pour large volumes of water directly on the flames.

Homes in the surrounding area were evacuated, while ESB cut the power supply to a number of houses adjacent to the scene. The cause of the fire is currently unknown.
