In typical style, the Corkman made a relaxed yet strong start to the race, powering through to claim the win, beating the second-place New Zealander by 3.5 seconds.

Also securing gold medals in Florida were Mark O’Donovan and Shane O’Driscoll who won the lightweight men’s pair.

A large crowd celebrated in Skibbereen, watching the races live.

In Turner’s Cross last night, Cork City FC got revenge on Limerick for last week’s league defeat. City won by a goal to move on to the FAI Cup Final at the Aviva Stadium in November.
