Go-ahead for 29-bed hotel and bar at Clancy’s
PLANNING has been granted for a 29-bed hotel at the former Clancy’s Bar in the city centre.
The former bar, which closed at the start of 2017, will be transformed into a boutique hotel and bar after city planners yesterday approved the development.
The entrance of the hotel will be on Prince’s Street, with the new bar development fronting onto Marlborough Street.
The application came from building owner Colin Ross. Mr Ross bought the building from long-time owners the O’Sullivan family in 1998. He ran Clancy’s until 2010, at which point he leased out the busy bar.
Clancy’s Bar had operated for almost 200 years before its closure in 2017.
The hotel is the latest in a series of developments planned for the local hospitality sector. There are more than 1,000 hotel beds in various stages of planning in Cork city.
The new 165-bed Maldron Hotel on South Mall is due to open before Christmas, while a 136-bed hotel is at the centre of the planned development on Horgan’s Quay.
Plans have also been submitted for 165-bed development in Parnell Place while planning approval was given for a 193-bed hotel on Sullivan’s Quay during the summer.
A 73-bed hotel on the corner of MacCurtain Street and York Street was approved in recent months, while extensions have been approved for the Kingsley Hotel (63 beds) and the Metropole (212) beds.
A 96-bed floating hotel moored at Penrose Quay was also greenlit by planners, with the applicants hopeful of being in situ before the end of the year.
