Calls for Sunbeam redevelopment following overnight fire

City councillors have called for the redevelopment of a Blackpool area to be made a priority after a fire broke out there last night.

The old bingo hall in the Sunbeam industrial estate on Redforge road in Blackpool suffered severe damage following an extensive fire overnight.

Five fire units battled the blaze for hours after being alerted shortly after 12.30am, eventually returning to their stations shortly after 6am.

Local councillor Thomas Gould (SF) said it is not the first time a fire has broken out in the industrial estate.

He has called for the area to be redeveloped.

“I’m very disappointed at the latest fire in the area,” said Cllr Gould.

“It’s not the first time there has been a fire here and it’s clear that something needs to be done.

“There has been talk of a redevelopment there for years but nothing has been done,” he added.

“There is plans for housing on parts of the site but it’s been like this for years.

“It’s a major site right in the heart of Blackpool and it needs to be redeveloped to include businesses, shops and housing, so it can have a positive impact on the area.” 

Fellow councillor, Kenneth O’Flynn (FF) described the incident as “very upsetting” for the people of Blackpool.

He called on city council to implement the entire development plans for both North Blackpool and the village of Blackpool.

“We have some good news stories coming for Blackpool with various housing redevelopment in the area,” said Cllr O’Flynn.

“Too long it's been ignored by officials of Cork city council.

“The village has tremendous potential with the proximity of Apple computers,” he added.

“Cork city council needs to start fighting for the opening of the railway station that so many local businesses paid tremendous contribution towards in planning fees.

“The city council seem happy to receive the money but not willing to even discuss with Iarnrod Road Eireann the opening of the train station.

“Without the support of Cork city council and the interest in the area will see more derelict buildings and more fires,” warned Cllr O’Flynn.
