Next week Cork audiences have a chance to see a performer who has been described as ‘passionate, witty, just plain great’ by Roddy Doyle.

Stephen James Smith, a key figure in the rise of spoken word in contemporary Ireland, is currently touring in the UK and Ireland and appears in Kinsale on Saturday October 5.

His poetry videos have amassed over 2.5 million views and in 2017 he was commissioned by St. Patrick’s festival to write a new poem as a “Celebratory Narrative” of Ireland.

The resultant piece ‘My Ireland’ is accompanied by a short film which has been viewed over 300,000 times and was screened at the London film festival.

Stephen has performed at high profile events & venues such as Electric Picnic, other voices, The National Concert Hall in Dublin, The Barbican in London, Vicar Street and the London Palladium (alongside Oscar winner Glen Hansard); The Oscar Wilde Awards in Los Angeles, Glastonbury Festival and many more.

Poet Tony Walsh is also appearing at the event in The Trident Hotel on October 5 and his audience has been told to ‘expect belly-laughs, tears and everything in between from this stunning, big-hearted performer’.

Tickets are €12, available at wordsbywater.ie
