Next Thursday, September 12 between 8am and 4pm the Council will accept clean and dry mattresses for free at the civic amenity Site on the Kinsale Road.

The unwanted mattresses will be accepted for free for one day only and there is a maximum of three mattresses per vehicle allowed to be disposed of.

Mattresses are normally charged €15 for a single and €20 for a double.

City Hall said the amnesty is for domestic purposes only and no commercial customers can avail of the offer.

The illegal dumping of unwanted mattresses was highlighted recently when a video went viral on the internet showing a man confronting a person dumping an old mattress in a bog.

The person taking the video forced the man to retrieve the mattress from the bog and put in back in the car while he berated him for what he was doing.

His use of the phrase "Ah, sorry me hole" led to the spread of the #sorrymehole hashtag on Twitter.
