The official unveiling of a mural at the North Monastery School, Fair Hill, took place on Thursday.

The mural is dedicated to the memory of Tomas MacCurtain, Terence MacSwiney (his successor as lord mayor, and also a past pupil of the school), and other famous alumni, including figures such as former taoiseach Jack Lynch and all-Ireland winning captain of the Cork hurling team, Tomas Mulcahy.

It is the work of well known Cork artist Alan Hurley, who was in attendance for the event.

The mural is just the start of a series of projects planned this year to celebrate the centenary.

The centenary programme will involve both primary and secondary students of the North Monastery schools, led by second-levels pupils involved in the History Club.

Fionnuala MacCurtain, grand-daughter of Tomas and Cathal MacSwiney Brugha (grandson of both Terence MacSwiney and Cathal Brugha) were in attendance, as was Tomas Mulcahy, and relatives of Jack Lynch.

The mural was officially unveiled by Lord Mayor John Sheehan.
