A call has been made for the public and businesses to get behind a food drive that aims to see 20-foot containers around Cork filled by the middle of December.

The annual NRG Store Food Appeal will bolster Feed Cork, a voluntary organisation that has prepared more than one million meals for the less fortunate over the past two and a half years.

In the first 18 months, Feed Cork, based on Lower Oliver Plunkett Street, surpassed 500,000 meals and saw more than 5,000 families catered for before demand for its services rocketed over the next year.

The NRG Store Food Appeal is the brainchild of Little Island-based firm Sea Box Group. It will see a range of 20-foot containers around the city filled with food for Feed Cork by the middle of December.

Sea Box Group managing director Patrick Hogan said the appeal is asking people to bring non-perishable foods and chocolates to various drop-off points around Cork over the coming weeks.

Mr Hogan said: “We are calling on people all around Cork, including businesses, to get involved. I have seen first hand the work that the amazing volunteers at Feed Cork do, and it is utterly moving."

"The dedication towards their fellow citizens to ensure they do not go hungry compelled us in Sea Box and NRG Store to want to help in any way we could.”

The NRG Store Food Appeal, was launched by the Lord Mayor of Cork, Cllr John Sheehan.

Cllr Sheehan said: “Feed Cork has been quietly going about its mission for more than two years, not seeking any limelight or recognition for the magnificent work it does. The organization’s dedication to the less fortunate among us is inspiring. It would be fitting to see that dedication matched by the people of Cork, whose generosity is unrivalled and who always rise to the occasion.”

· Toss Bryan, Courthouse Rd, Rathealy, Fermoy

· The Squad, Unit 2 John Harrington Ind Est., Tramore Road
