The Marina will be closed to traffic from this Friday.

The pedestrianisation of the popular Cork city amenity is set to last for three months, following which a review of its operation will take place.

The closure is due to come into operation from the Páirc Uí Chaoimh stadium as far as Church Avenue from Friday May 15.

Fianna Fáil Councillor Terry Shannon welcomed the move and said he’s looking forward to seeing the successful implementation of the strategy.

There have long been calls for the pedestrianisation of the Marina, and pedestrianisation of this section occurred for a brief period earlier this year to facilitate Covid-19 testing at the stadium, however it was HSE led and was not a long-term strategy.

This time, however, Cork City Council are closing off four streets in Cork to through traffic, including the Marina.

Paul Street, Pembroke Street, and Tuckey Street, are the other three streets that will see changes, however, timeframes for the commencement of the pedestrianisation at those locations hasn’t yet been given.
