Cork businessman Barry Collins has been remembered as a "great community man" whose generosity "knew no bounds" following his passing.
Barry Collins, of Barry Collins’ SuperValu in Carrigaline, passed away unexpectedly but peacefully on Friday.
The Collins family name has been synonymous with retailing in Carrigaline since 1865 when the family opened their first small store in the town.
Since then, Barry Collins’ SuperValu has grown exponentially.
The Collins family also own Carrigaline Court Hotel and Barry’s Bar and Restaurant in Douglas.
Fianna Fáil councillor Seamus McGrath lauded Mr Collins for the employment which he brought to the area and for his community work.
"He was a very successful businessman who made a huge contribution to Carrigaline over his lifetime.
"He provided significant employment locally and was also great support to local community groups and clubs through generous sponsorship," he said.
"There has been a large number of tributes paid and expressions of sympathy locally from many quarters.
"For my own part, I want to pass on my genuine sympathies to his family," he continued.
Chairperson of Carrigaline Tidy Towns, Liam O’Connor, also praised Mr Collins as a community stalwart.
"He was a very progressive Chairman of Tidy Towns for many years in Carrigaline and he continued to have a great interest in tidy towns over the years.
"I spoke to him when we won our first gold medal a couple of years back and he was delighted.
"He was there for so long and he was delighted to see us win that.
"The Collins family continued to be our main sponsor over the years and we have run many campaigns down in the shopping centre where they are based," he told.
"He was a great community man. My condolences to his children David, Peter and Ruth, and of course his wife, Sally."
The Collins family are also the main sponsor of Carrigaline GAA, the club which Mr Collins played with in his youth. "The Club was very sad to learn of the passing of Barry Collins, an Honorary Member of our Club and its main sponsor.
"We are deeply indebted to him for the support he gave to the community of Carrigaline and in particular Carrigaline GAA Club over his lifetime,” said Club Secretary, Alan Murphy.
"His generosity knew no bounds".
As a mark of respect to Mr Collins, all Club activities will be cancelled on Wednesday.
