More patients waiting for beds at CUH ED than any other hospital

30 people are waiting for a bed at Cork University Hospital (CUH), the highest figure for any hospital in the country.

Thirty-seven admitted patients are waiting for beds at hospitals in Cork today.

According to the latest Trolley Watch report from the Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation (INMO), 30 people are waiting for a bed at the emergency department at Cork University Hospital (CUH), the highest figure for any ED in the country.

Yesterday, management at CUH appealed to the public to contact their GP in the first instance and explore all other options available to them before attending the Emergency Department if their needs are not urgent, saying the hospital had been “exceptionally busy in recent days.”

“Patient care is paramount in CUH and this situation is being treated as a priority by Hospital Management who have taken steps to address this issue,” hospital management said in a statement.

A further seven people are waiting for beds at the Mercy University Hospital today.

Nationally, 192 patients are waiting for beds at hospitals around the country with 172 waiting in emergency departments, while 20 are in wards elsewhere in the affected hospitals.
