Planning permission has been granted for a new playground in Bandon, a decision that has been warmly welcomed by Ann Bambury, chair of the fundraising Bandon Playground Group.

“We are thrilled,” she said. “It has been a long process. We have a very strong committee. We are very grateful to Cork Marts who donated 1.2 acres to us.

“We set the goal of raising €100,000 ourselves. We have raised €50,000 to date following various fundraisers and donations. We will raise the balance through more fundraisers and securing funds from both state and local government grant schemes.”

The community has rallied behind the impressive development plans, which is adjacent to the skate park.

The proposed new playground will further enhance the area by creating an all- inclusive public play park.

Ms Bambury is full of praise for the help they have received from all parties and individuals.

“We have received great support from the community,” she said. “People are thrilled it is going ahead. It will be a huge boost to the town and local area. The site is shovel-ready. It will be all inclusive. The finished project will be state of the art. There will be a sensory garden.

“There will be a big emphasis on sensory equipment. It will have a walkway for the whole community. It will have modern equipment and beautiful landscaping.

“We are hopeful of having the project completed by 2022. We are the gateway to West Cork. It will be a huge tourist attraction.”

Ms Bambury is confident the playground will provide great facilities for generations to come for both young and old.

“Bandon is really taking off,” she said. “There is a good community spirit here. This will be a huge addition to Bandon.”
