Sinn Féin have confirmed Councillor Thomas Gould as their candidate for Cork North Central in the upcoming general election.

It follows his strong performance in the recent by-election, while his party colleague and sitting TD in the constituency Jonathan O'Brien also revealed in recent weeks that he would not be running in this election.

Nominations for the candidacy closed today, with Cllr Gould understood to be the only person nominated. His campaign is due to be officially launched on Saturday.

It's also understood that Sinn Féin will meet tonight to discuss whether a second candidate would be added to the ticket in the constituency.

Sitting TD Donnchadh Ó Laoghaire will run as the stand-alone Sinn Féin candidate in Cork South Central.
