Douglass anniversary: Public’s help wanted for UCC celebration of historic visit

The organisers are seeking ideas for commemorations from Douglass enthusiasts around the world, with a focus on Douglass’s life and his journey across the island.

ACADEMICS at University College Cork have appealed to the public for ideas to mark the 175th anniversary of abolitionist leader, Frederick Douglass’s visit to Ireland.

The academics, in collaboration with students, artists, writers, and community groups, have launched Douglass Week, an all-island collaborative series of events. It will run from February 8-14, 2021.

Douglass Week will feature a variety of performative events, creative installations, and critical discussions, offering a collection of responses to Douglass’ footprint in Ireland.

The organisers are seeking ideas for commemorations from Douglass enthusiasts around the world, with a focus on Douglass’s life and his journey across the island.

Dr Caroline Schroeter, co-ordinator, says that Douglass Week aims to “connect people who share an interest and passion for Frederick Douglass, but also offers a platform for people to discuss contemporary issues related to his life and legacy”.
