Developers seek to increase student bed spaces on Washington Street

DEVELOPERS behind a major student apartment complex on Washington Street are seeking to increase the number of bed spaces permitted in the development.
Planning permission for a 242-bed development was granted by Cork City Council in 2018 subject to 38 conditions, including that the developers replace concrete footpaths on Wood Street, Lynch’s Street, and Washington Street West. IRE Real Estate Investment Partners Fund II are now seeking to up the bed numbers by 50.
The development originally granted for the former Square Deal premises, which is a protected structure, has given permission for a development ranging in height from two to six storeys.
If An Bord Pleanala gives the go-ahead for the change in the number of bed spaces at the apartments, it would see 292 student beds available at the Former Square Deal premises.
The planning appeals board is due to make a decision on the case by April 14.
This is the latest in a string of private student developments mooted for the city centre recently.
It comes following the news last week that UCC are set to increase their on-campus accommodation rental prices by 3% for the upcoming academic year.
