Developer re-submits plans for 13-storey apartment block in Glanmire

A DEVELOPER behind a 13-storey apartment block in Glanmire has returned with a new planning application after the first was deemed invalid. 

The development at Ballinglanna is planned on a brownfield site and is set to include a restaurant, a gym and leisure centre, two commercial units, and 12 storeys of 66 apartments with parking for 102 vehicles.

The first application was submitted by Tom Moynihan but was deemed invalid due to a public notice not being fully visible. Another application has now been submitted and is on display in the area.

There are concerns the development will increase traffic congestion in the area before €6m worth of infrastructure secured by Cork County Council under the Government’s Local Infrastructure Housing Activation Fund (LIHAF) is put in place. The infrastructure updates are set to tie in with a 608-home development in Ballinglanna set to be built over the coming years and includes junction upgrades, road improvements, cycle and pedestrian facilities, and a link road from Riverstown to Hazelwood.

Local councillor Ger Keohane said the height of the building is a major concern and the road infrastructure is adequate.

“There are three apartment blocks next to this potential development that are about eight or nine storeys. A development such as this would take away from the character of the Glanmire area. It will affect the view of residents in Brookville, Edenbrook and Glyntown," he said.

“The road infrastructure also won’t be able to take this with the Ballinglanna development. The flood prevention scheme is due for quarter three of this year and this will have an impact,” he added.
