Cork's transatlantic relations strengthened
Mayor of Newport Harry Winthrop believes the longstanding relationship between his city and Kinsale is the reason for the transatlantic flights from Cork.
Kinsale has been twinned with the Rhode Island city for close to 20 years and Mr Winthrop described it as a thriving relationship that has benefited both locations and their citizens.
“The relationship between Newport and Kinsale is one of the greatest of any sister city relationships anywhere in the world,” he said. “The connections that have been developed between the people in the two communities are far greater than any other sister pairing I have been involved with.

“It goes beyond the government connection, it is the personal relationships. You can go into The White House (in Kinsale) and look at the guest book at all the people who have come from Newport over the years, travelling in their hundreds.
“I am completely convinced there would not be a Norwegian Air flight from Cork to Providence if it were not for the sister city relationship between Kinsale and Newport.”
Mr Winthrop is part of a delegations of 42 officials and holidaymakers who travelled from the US to take part in the Kinsale Gourmet Festival, held over the weekend.
