Call for progress on Carrigaline Park and Ride 

An update on the County Council plans to provide a Park and Ride facility in Carrigaline is being sought by Fianna Fáil Councillor Seamus McGrath.

The Carrigaline Councillor said there has been land designated to the proposed amenity in the Shannonpark area for a number of years and there does not seem to be any progress on the proposed development.

Mr McGrath said that he thought a Park and Ride in Carrigaline would be a very popular option for people travelling to the city for work or leisure and also said that the new bus route through Carrigaline onto Ringaskiddy that is coming onstream in the coming months, could be used by people working out in that area.

The Councillor also said routes from Carrigaline to Little Island and Mahon should also be considered, in line with the Park and Ride, in order to offer people an alternative way of getting to work.

“A Park and Ride would give people the opportunity to use the bus service more frequently for things like commuting to and from work. There is significant traffic congestion in the area and the N28 is a number of years away so we need to look at our options.” Mr McGrath said that the bus route to Carrigaline had improved a great deal in recent months, now offering a service every 15 minutes and also boasting the first 24-hour route in Ireland.

Despite the many benefits of a Park and Ride facility in Cork’s largest town, Mr McGrath said from what he knew, plans were in their infancy.

“My understanding is that the land has been designated, but it is not actually owned about the Council and there are a number of details that need to be worked through.”
