Almost 2,500 student beds being developed in Cork as a fresh application is lodged with City Hall

More than 2,000 student apartment bed spaces are currently under construction or planned in Cork.

A fresh planning application lodged this week for another development will add a further 174 bed spaces if approved.

Kevin Lynch has lodged plans for an eight-storey building on the site of the former Kelleher's Tyre premises on the Victoria Road.

The development will be made up of 25 apartments with 174 student beds.

The new application seeks to alter existing planning permission in order to add an additional five apartments.

In their application, the developers state there is still demand for student beds despite the number of other proposals in Cork.

They said there will still be demand for student apartments by 2024 even if every proposal in Cork is completed.

A planning decision on the development is expected in July.

This new application is one of seven major student apartment developments in construction or in the planning phase in Cork.

At the northern end of the former Beamish & Crawford brewery site, construction has been underway for a number of months building 67 student apartments to provide 455-bed spaces.

Work is expected to begin shortly at the Crow's Nest site, also at Victoria Cross, by UCC who are building 255-bed development.

The owners of the former Square Deal site have permission for 228 student beds along with a cafe and co-working space on the ground floor.

The red brick exterior will be restored and retained, and windows and doors will be repaired or replaced, along with the existing roof.

A student accommodation development of 145 beds is to be developed on a one-acre site on Farranlea Road.

Real estate investment company Round Hill Capital has acquired the site with planning permission already in place.

London company Future Generations recently received the go-ahead for Cork's largest student apartment development on the former Coca-Cola site on the Carrigrohane Straight Road. They have plans for 623 student beds.

Earlier this month, developers Lyonshall received planning permission from An Bord Pleanála for a major 419-bed student apartment development on the Bandon Road overlooking The Lough.
