TV: Great ideas for an Irish staycation

Still hoping to squeeze in a staycation before the sunny days end and the kids go back to school? Some of Ireland’s greatest summer destinations are featured in a trio of programmes on Nationwide next week.

First up on RTÉ1 on Monday at 7pm, the team explore the breath-taking Copper Coast in County Waterford, named after the copper mines that operated there in the 19th century.

Stretching 25km from Tramore along the south-east coast, the Copper Coast is renowned for its dramatic cliffs, sweeping seascapes and panoramic countryside views.

Presenter Bláthnaid Ní Chofaigh travels the coast – uncovering some of the many sights and experiences that await visitors in this unique coastal region.

In Wednesday’s episode, Anne Cassin heads to County Louth to explore Carlingford, one of Ireland’s best-preserved medieval towns. Rich in ancient history and charm, Carlingford and the surrounding Cooley Peninsula are a haven for families and outdoor enthusiasts alike.

The programme features a visit to Carlingford Adventure Centre, one of Ireland’s top destinations for water sports and outdoor activities.

Beyond the town’s historic walls, the Cooley Mountains and scenic walking trails offer another way to experience the area’s natural beauty.

Finally, in Friday’s Nationwide on RTÉ1 at 7pm, Bláthnaid Ní Chofaigh visits Bundoran in County Donegal, one of Ireland’s top seaside towns and a popular destination with both families and adventure-seekers.

She explores its rich history and vibrant tourism scene, from sea swimming and surfing to art and adventure, Bundoran offers something for everyone.
