Cork athlete Max O'Reilly on his hopes for the summer and how he spends his weekend.
My Weekend: 'I'm usually tucked up in bed by 10pm on a Friday night'

Max has represented Ireland multiple times at u18, u20 and u23 levels in the 100m and 4x100m relay.

Tell us a little bit about yourself and your work:

My name is Max O’Reilly, and I’m 20 years old. I live in Carrigaline, and I’m currently studying architectural technology in MTU. I’m a sprinter and I run with Riverstick Kinsale AC, while training in MTU six times a week. I’ve represented Ireland multiple times at U18, U20 and U23 levels in the 100m and 4x100m relay.

What is your ideal way to spend a Friday night?

My Friday nights aren’t that of a typical 20-year-old college student. I’m usually tucked up in bed by about 10pm, ready for my double session bright and early on Saturday morning. I usually just throw on YouTube before going to sleep... so quite boring really.

Lie-ins or up with the lark.. which is it for you?

Definitely lie-ins, I’ll take any sleep or rest I can get.

Does work creep into your weekend at all?

My college course is pretty heavy and continuous, so I’d usually have to do a bit of college work during the weekends.

If money was no object, where would you head to on a weekend city break? And who would you bring with you?

I’ve always wanted to go to Japan, so I’d say Tokyo with a few of my buddies. Probably would try to extend to beyond just a weekend, though

Closer to home, is there some place you like to head to recharge the batteries?

I don’t really have a particular spot to go to switch off, no. I’ve always been interested in darts, so usually just throw a few darts when I’m bored in order to switch off.

Do you like to catch up with family/friends at the weekend?

Definitely. I don’t have much time during the week with college and training, so any free time I have at the weekend I like to spend it with friends and family.

Do you get to indulge any hobbies? Even as a spectator?

I like watching a few sports. Mainly soccer, darts, and the F1. I used to play soccer, but had to give it up to focus on the athletics. I’m glued to the dart board at the moment, so love playing that.

Entertain or be entertained? If it’s the latter, do you have a signature dish?

Definitely be entertained, I’m too shy to be the entertainer 24/7.

We have so many places to eat out in Cork - where are your go to spots for coffee/ lunch/ special meal?

I’m not a fan of coffee personally, so that’s not for me. As far as food goes, I’d be pretty boring and say Nando’s. Can’t go wrong with it.

Sunday night comes around too fast.. how do you normally spend it?

I usually just watch the soccer with the family, and then apart from that, not much else happens on a Sunday. Just prepare for college on Monday morning and training that evening.

What time does your alarm clock go off on Monday morning?

I’m usually up for about 8am, I start college at 10am, so not too early.

Anything else you are up to right now...

I’m coming off the back of a good indoor season, considering the lack of training, so I’m really looking forward to seeing what I can do come outdoors with a bit of consistency.

I’m hoping to qualify for European champs in August as a part of the 4x100m relay team, all going well!
