Three fabulous family homes on sale right now in Blarney

Sunberry House in Blarney, up for sale for €465,000, is a beautiful period home

With its iconic castle, the beautiful town square, and numerous cafés and shops drawing in tourists and locals alike, there has always been something special about Blarney.

Only 8km from the city centre and a five-minute drive to the shopping district of Blackpool, this historic village was made famous by the 15th century castle, and Queen Elizabeth I stating that its owners, the McCarthys, were full of Blarney!

I looked up three properties currently on sale in the town.

1. Sunberry House, Blarney, €465,000

It is a rarity for a period home to come on the market in the centre of Blarney.

Perched on a hill that once towered over the town, this beautiful period home invites you to be a part of the grandeur of a bygone and beguiling era.

Built in the latter part of the 1800s, the house was part of a row along a private lane. To the left of the house, the original stables were converted into a family home, and to the right are two small cottage-style houses. All are owner-occupied.

The house itself has three bedrooms and three bathrooms and stands on 167 square metres, though with a BER rating of F.

It was originally a two-terraced home that was converted to make this impressive townhouse.

The home has been owned and loved by several generations of the same local business family.

From the moment I walked in the door, I was struck by the size of the rooms and the ornate high ceilings.

As with all period homes, the most is made of the natural light and the quality of the original features impresses.

To the left is the dining room with a working open fireplace with ornate surround. Across the hall is the living room, again a very impressive size, with a working fireplace and a view out to the front garden. The high ceilings allow light to reflect all over the room.

To the rear of the ground floor is the kitchen. It’s perfectly functional, however, the new owners might want to expand it. Planning was sought and approved for an extension several years ago but it wasn’t followed through. The new owners may want to look at this option.

Halfway up the stairs is a bathroom and the third bedroom, an ample size with a view out over the back garden.

Turn back on yourself and at the top of the stairs are two hugely impressive bedrooms. Both have ensuite facilities and walk-in closets.

The view couldn’t possibly be improved upon as you are looking straight out at Blarney Castle.

The thick walls mean there is precious little noise from the outside world, and yet it is a two-minute stroll to the garden square.

The laneway from the main road all the way to the parking area belongs to the house, as does the access around the back and to a gate that allows you to get to the back of the property.

The yard is huge. There is so much potential here for a patio, or a split-level garden filled with native fauna or even fruit trees.

At the top of the garden there is access to a roadway, so perhaps anther property could be built here? Or maybe planning could be secured so as to sell the site? Or just keep it all to yourself! At the front of the house, the pathway splits a lovely lawn that would be perfect for cast iron furniture. Can you see yourself taking tea on the lawn of your period home?

As for practicalities, the primary school is at the end of your lane and your children wouldn’t have to cross any roads to get there.

2. 78 Cluain Ard, Blarney. €645,000

Our second property encapsulates efficiency and energy-wisdom to a tee.

This five-bedroom, three-bathroom home lies on 154 square metres and has a BER rating of A3.

It is perfect for the modern family looking for clean lines, convenience, low energy costs and low maintenance. With its own lovely drive and private gateway, this home can be as individual as the owners themselves.

The gorgeous kitchen is filled with light and there is a huge dining area leading on to what may be a snug, a TV room, or a play room.

The garden is secure for those with smallies, while the utility room is a dream for those that like to keep their house free of clutter.

The grey carpets upstairs will blend beautifully with any décor and the walls are offered with a neutral pallet so the new owners can indulge their personal taste.

If this is to be a family home, there is plenty of room for swings. Or perhaps a patio with barbecue area is more to your taste.

This home is modern yet warm, it has clean lines but is still homely and welcoming. A very inviting and tempting option for the discerning buyer.

3. Coolowen, Blarney, €450,000

Our third home is a little gem and can be summed up in one word - ‘pretty’.

Coolowen has four bedrooms and two bathrooms, is on 132 square metres, and has a BER of D2.

The property encapsulates a cottage feel with modern conveniences. There are countless possibilities with this home!

It is in a country setting, but is minutes away from Blarney and the bustling city. It has a substantial garden but is easy to maintain as a lawn, so if you have yet to find your green fingers, there’s no rush! Can you see the greenhouses with your fruit and veg growing happily?

The garage offers even more options. Maybe it could be converted into another home for a resident young adult while they’re saving to get on the ladder?

The home is a lovely size and the large windows allow light to reflect around every room.

The kitchen is gorgeous! The white units and the timber floors match beautifully.

The current owners have an exceptional eye for blending modern and classic and this flows through the whole house. The finish on the interior is exceptional and even though the garden might need a bit of love, there is no rush on you to get started on it.

My advice if this is the home for you? Take pictures of the current layout and furniture, as I’m not sure you could improve on the current owners’ wonderful taste.
