Person to Person: 'I definitely save... but do have moments of madness... don’t we all?'

Cork radio presenter Simon Murdoch on the one person he’d like to see in concert, what makes him happy, and family life with his wife and two children.
Person to Person: 'I definitely save... but do have moments of madness... don’t we all?'

Simon Murdoch says he’s definitely a night owl... although, he admits that since the arrival of his children, that’s not always practical.

Tell us about yourself?

I’m a presenter on Cork’s 96FM, providing the craic and tunes in the afternoons, Monday-Friday 12-4pm! With brilliant music, guest interviews, amazing competitions, Cork goings-on and a sprinkling of silliness, it’s the best soundtrack every afternoon... I’ve won Gold at the national IMRO radio awards twice, for Radio DJ of the year in 2023 and 2024... not that I go on about it or anything!

A Cork man through and through, raised in Turners Cross, then Frankfield and now Blackrock is home.

Oasis fan, Liverpool fan, golf fan, pizza fan, beer fan... and like most fella’s my age, I feel that I can still do a job up front.

Life is busy with two kids, so most of my spare time these days is spent trying to tidy the house!

Where do you live?

Blackrock, Cork city.

Family?

My wife Síle, and two kids Lily and Alfie.

Best friend?

Obviously, many people want this title but I’d have to say Willy O’Leary. We grew up as neighbours, he was my best man, and he also owns a pub... so if I want to continue getting free pints then I should really say him!

Earliest childhood memory?

I have no idea what age I was, but I remember being in my grandmother’s living room playing with a toy Ectomobile! (Ghostbusters car) Very ’80s...

Person you most admire?

How can I name one person!? I admire many people, personally and professionally, some will know who they are!

Person who most irritates you?

Where was your most memorable holiday?

As a kid, it was a trip to Florida... The magic of Disney!

As a teenager, the lads’ trips to Santa Ponsa! And as an adult, New York City stands out...

Favourite TV programme?

Right now, it’s a toss up between Landman and Mayor Of Kingstown... of all time, probably Breaking Bad, with The Sopranos a very close second.

Favourite radio show?

Obviously, afternoons with Simon Murdoch on Cork’s 96FM!

Your signature dish if cooking?

Honest answer... I can’t cook... lashing a pizza in the oven is as good as it gets.

Favourite restaurant?

Too many to mention, I recently ate at Finn’s Farmcut in Kinsale and it was amazing.

Jacobs on the Mall... Isaac’s... Rossini’s... the list goes on

Last book you read?

I haven’t read a book in years... something I should change.

Best book you read?

DJ’ing For Dummies.

Last album/CD/download you bought?

I listen to new music all the time, but a recent purchase on vinyl was Council Skies - Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds.

Favourite song?

Impossible to answer, but probably something written by Noel Gallagher.

One person you would like to see in concert?

If you’d asked me a year ago, it would’ve been to see Oasis back together, luckily, I got to do that twice this year!

I would do anything to see Daft Punk live... let’s hope.

Do you have a pet?

Nope.

Morning person or night owl?

Definitely a night owl, but in recent times, the arrival of two kids, it’s just not that practical!

Your proudest moment?

When it comes to work, I think winning the IMRO Radio DJ of the year award twice, 2023 and 2024, that’s up there for sure.

Spendthrift or saver?

Hmmm... I definitely save... but do have moments of madness... don’t we all?

Name one thing you would improve in your area in which you live?

I’m very lucky to live in an area which has seen significant investment and improvement over the last few years... so I can’t complain too much.

What makes you happy?

My babies.

How would you like to be remembered?

‘He was a good lad’.

What else are you up to at the moment?

Outside of the radio show, I’ve been busy in recent times hosting ‘In conversation’ events, specifically with cast members of the Australian TV show Home And Away.

I also DJ in Popscene, Cork’s 80s & 90s music venue!
