Our big day was ‘everything we hoped for’, say Mercy Hospital workers

Victoria O’Herlihy, from Faranree, and Samantha O’Herlihy (nee Lees), from Glanmire, tied the knot earlier this month after 14 years together.

The couple, who both work at the Mercy University Hospital, first met at a house party back in 2011.

“Neither of us were looking for anything serious — both fresh out of long-term relationships — but the universe clearly had other plans,” said Victoria.

“After that night, life just kept nudging us back together, until it finally stuck. We officially became a couple on New Year’s Eve, 2011, with an exploded bottle of Buck’s Fizz and a Domino’s pizza — double decadence crust, of course.”

On New Year’s Eve, 2019, Samantha took Victoria by surprise with her proposal.

“She planned everything with my family at my father’s house. I was completely clueless, off having a quiet pint with family in our local while she was back decorating the place with balloons and petals.

“When I came back, the kids (and all the nieces and nephews) were giggling and full of excitement. I walked into the living room to find Samantha holding a box — when I opened it, a balloon popped out, and as I turned around, there she was on one knee. I didn’t even think — I just blurted out ‘Yes!’ Because of course I’d marry my best friend… my soulmate,” Victoria said.

On May 2, 2025, surrounded by their three children, family and friends, the O’Herlihys were married at The Anglers in Cork.

“Our ceremony took place beneath the beautiful trees overlooking the River Lee, with the sun shining down on us, a true blessing for an outdoor wedding in Ireland. We suspect that everyone’s prayers and the presence of the ‘Child of Prague’ contributed to the glorious weather,” Victoria said.

Music at the ceremony was by Ambla, who performed on the violin and piano.

“Our celebrant, Edel O’Flynn, crafted a ceremony that was personal, humorous, and uplifting.

“Our highlight was our sand ceremony, symbolising the blending of our families into one, a meaningful touch for our blended family.”

The couple said that exchanging vows in the presence of their parents, who also served as their witnesses, added a special significance to the day.

“Looking at our marriage certificate will always remind us of their love and support,” they added.

After the ceremony, the couple held a reception for their guests, complete with cold beers, cocktails, and canapés.

“Instead of the traditional sit-down dinner, we opted for a homely barbecue with salads and beer buckets, reflecting our personal style. Dessert was our wedding cake, a delectable creation by Ruairi’s Kitchen, known for their bespoke wedding cakes,” the couple said.

Post-dinner entertainment included a performance by hypnotist Jason O’Callaghan and music by Kelvin Long, accompanied by saxophonist Lauren. DJ Darren kept the dance floor alive all night with a mix of music that had everyone moving, the couple said.

“Samantha, my beautiful and kind wife, meticulously planned every detail of the day from the decor to personalised touches that guests appreciated, including thoughtful items and entertainment for the children and adults, they are still the highlight of the conversation with family and friends,” Victoria said.
