IT’S been a tough few months for everyone, but spare a thought for the musicians among us.

Deprived of their live audiences and the venues their fans usually cram into, the nation’s singers, bands and instrumentalists have been left twiddling their thumbs.

As the country has begun to open up, the musician’s natural habitats have remained bolted and silent.

But tonight — for one night only — we will get a chance to pretend Covid-19 never existed, when some of the country’s finest acts — including Picture This, Gavin James and Cork star Lyra — perform from music venues across Ireland, beamed live straight into our living rooms.

Called Songs From An Empty Room, the event on RTÉ2 at 8.30pm will last for two hours and 45 minutes and is presented by Eoghan McDermott and Jenny Greene from The Olympia Theatre.

The one-off live music extravaganza will be in support of Minding Creative Minds and the Association of Irish Stage Technicians (AIST) Hardship Fund.

Lyra will be performing in her home city of Cyprus Avenue, along with Limerick rapper Denise Chaila and Dublin hip hop star Jafaris.

Other acts featuring are; Aimée, Eve Belle, Fia Moon, James Vincent McMorrow, Lisa McHugh, Mother DJs, Noel Hogan (The Cranberries) with Danny O’Reilly (The Coronas), Sorcha Richardson, Soulé, The Academic, The Blizzards, The Coronas, and The Stunning

As well as Cyprus Avenue, the other venues are The Olympia Theatre in Dublin, Dolan’s in Limerick, the INEC in Killarney and Galway’s Roisin Dubh.

The show will also air on RTÉ 2FM, and will be streaming live and on-demand on RTÉ Player.

Hosts Eoghan McDermott and Jenny Greene will interview a number of the featured artists.

The event is produced by EPIC — Event Production Industry Covid-19 Working Group — a cross-event working group representing the Live Events Sector formed to help the industry during the current crisis. It promises to be a memorable, poignant and historical night of music in these extraordinary times.

The broadcast will also feature footage from behind-the-scenes in Ireland’s event industry, with a focus on folk whose livelihoods have been severely impacted by the Covid-19 pandemic.

You can also stay up to date on Songs From An Empty Room and see behind-the-scenes footage on RTÉ2 and RTÉ 2FM’s social channels, and by following #WeAreTheSupportAct on Twitter.
