Update: Garda investigations have been launched following the fire at the Ashgrove Recycling and Waste Management facility in Churchfield early this morning.

A Garda spokesperson told The Echo that the scene has been sealed off and investigations into the incident are ongoing.

“Gardaí and emergency services attended the scene of a fire that occurred at a commercial premises in the Churchfield area of Cork city in the early hours of this morning, Sunday 12th of November 2023.

“There were no reports of injuries.

“The scene has been preserved for a technical examination.

“Investigations are ongoing,” the spokesperson said.

Meanwhile, in a statement from Ashgrove Recycling and Waste Management facility, the company said they believe the fire was started deliberately.

They added that their yard “is clear of waste since new management took over in 2018”.

“An investigation is pending. We have lost two vehicles, two trailers and once excavator. It is a very sad day for us,” the company said.

They moved to thank everyone who came to their assistance following the incident.

“We would like to thank the public, top security, fire services, the garda and the forensics who without their rapid response things would be a lot worse for us,” they said.

Business will resume as usual at the premises tomorrow.

In a post on X, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter, Cork City Fire Brigade said units from Anglesea Street and Ballyvolane responded to the incident and “worked hard to prevent the fire spreading”.

A spokesperson from the Cork City Fire Brigade told The Echo that the fire occurred at the Ashgrove Recycling and Waste Management facility and involved a number of large vehicles on fire.

The call came in at approximately 5.30am and crew members were at the scene for just over two hours.

One unit from Ballyvolane and three from Anglesea Street responded to the incident.
