Tributes paid to Cork actor Tony Scannell following his passing

The Kinsale native will perhaps be best known for his role in the British police drama series, The Bill, in which he played DS Ted Roach.

Scannell who passed away at the age of 74, starred in the hit series for nine years in the 1980s and 90s.

He returned for two episodes in 2000.

"We're devastated to learn that Tony Scannell, beloved by so many as The Bill's DS Ted Roach, has passed away," UKTV Play said in a statement.

"He was a commanding, hysterically funny, unforgettable presence throughout the show's first decade."

Scannell also featured in Flash Gordon, Evil Never Dies and Waking The Dead.

Hi partner, Agnes Lillis, told BBC News: "Tony was the big love of my life. 

"We'd been together a long, long time, and we grew closer and closer.

"Our relationship had many different lives, and he had many different lives in the sense of character transformations. 

"He was very mellow and considerate."

Katy Manning, best known for her part as the companion Jo Grant in the BBC science fiction television series

Doctor Who 

"He was a gentle soul who I was lucky to work with on a film a few years ago," she said.
