Breaking: Houses evacuated after partial building collapse in Cork city

A HOUSE partially collapsed on Roman Street in the Shandon area this evening.

Calls were made to the Fire Brigade around 8.30pm with Gardaí called to assist at the scene around 9pm.

It is understood that houses in the area were evacuated under safety measures by Gardaí as the crumbling building was assessed by the Fire service.

The Fire Service has confirmed to The Echo that a wall has subsided at a residential property at Church Avenue, just off Roman Street backing onto John Street.

Two units of the Cork City Fire Brigade initially attended the incident that seemed to deteriorate as time passed.

This is one of three incidents of buildings collapsing in the city area in the past year.

Last June, a building on North Main Street partially collapsed and that building is still cordoned off at present.

In September 2019, the underside of a windowsill at 89/90 Patrick Street fell on a woman walking to a work event.
