Limerick film studios in talks to secure more big budget productions after NBC cancel Nightflyers

TROY Studios, in Limerick, said it is in talks to secure another major TV or film production contract after its first big-budget production, Nightflyers, was cancelled by NBC Syfy.

It’s understood the decision to cancel the €50m Syfy/Netflix co-produced series was due to a sharp fall in viewers of the psychological space thriller, which was based on the 1980 novella and film of the same name by Game of Thrones author George RR Martin.

The series season finale “drew just 420,000 live viewers (down from 623,000 for the series premiere”, according to an article in The Hollywood Reporter online.

Syfy had also released the entire series on its digital platforms last December and aired it over 10 straight consecutive nights on its linear network.

In a statement sent to this reporter, Troy Studios said Nightflyers, “was a positive partnership with NBC, which in turn helped place Troy Studios firmly on the international circuit of production studios”, and it expected to attract more major productions to Limerick.

We are in discussion with a number of other exciting potential projects considering Ireland and Troy Studios as their production base. It is a particularly exciting time in the industry as the demand for studio space is more buoyant than ever. We anticipate securing another major production for Troy in the near future – watch this space

“Troy Studios appreciate the productive collaboration, which in turn also helped to make Troy Studios as well-known as it is today, a familiar name in the global production world. Both NBC and Troy look forward to collaborating again in the future.

Most importantly, the Nightflyers series was the genesis for establishing a crew base in the Limerick area and with our training partners, we will continue to grow the skills needed for the film and TV production industry here in the Mid-West

Troy is set to become “Ireland’s largest film and TV studio” as it expands its sound stage space to 100,000 sq ft.

The former Dell computer factory was purchased by Limerick City and County Council for €5.5m in May 2015 and the local authority agreed a long-term lease with Troy.

The facility has more than 280,000 sq ft of support buildings including workshops, props storage, costume, dressing rooms, production offices, hair and make-up rooms, as well as a backlot of five acres for exterior set construction.
