Lord Mayor of Dublin helps to catch alleged burglar in Dublin city centre

The Lord Mayor of Dublin Nial Ring has hit the headlines for helping to stop an alleged burglar during an incident near Bride Street yesterday afternoon.

The Mayor, who was on his way to the St Patrick's Day festival launch, jumped out of his car after spotting a man running down a street with two other men in pursuit.

He has praised the other men involved and the Gardaí, saying they were on the scene in seconds.

He said: "I got out of the car at the other end of the road and so when he was coming down running towards me, he saw that I was there, the guy chasing him and then another chap came out of an apartment block, and so he decided then at that stage, well, there's three people, he just gave up.

"So we surrounded him, waited for the Guards to arrive which took about 20 seconds, and they took him away.

"When I got out of my car, the man was out of breath and had basically given up by the time myself and another man grabbed him.

Staff at Marsh's Library on St Patrick's Close, described the incident on Twitter, saying: "Wow! Our staff just spotted and chased an *alleged* burglar coming out of a neighbouring building. Running up Peter Street the guy was arrested by none other than the Lord Mayor of Dublin who happened to be in the area."

The Lord Mayor said: "I wish I could say this guy was a 6ft 6in body builder, but he was only a small enough lad in his early 20s.

"It was the first time I've helped to make a citizen's arrest, but it was certainly less dramatic than it all sounds."
