Gardaí hunt lone raider after second armed raid attempt on post office in 10 months

Gardaí are following a line of enquiry following an attempted armed robbery of Grenagh Post Office yesterday, writes Roisin Burke.

Inspector Gary McPolin from Gurranabraher station said the postmaster was distressed after a second armed raid attempt in ten months.

“The postmaster was on duty and just about to open up at 9am when he saw this fella walking up and down, kind of acting suspiciously.

“Just as he was about to open the door, this guy tried to push in the door and a struggle ensued. The postmaster said the man has a silver handgun in his hand.

“During the struggle, the suspect dropped a screwdriver and a Dunnes Stores plastic bag.

“He ran off in the direction of the Catholic church in Grenagh. Gardaí were called and responded immediately.” The Regional Support Unit and local Blarney Gardaí attended the scene.

CCTV footage is being examined in relation to the incident.

A spokesperson for An Post said they could not comment on the incident but went on to say that the security systems in place at An Post locations are extremely effective.

“We don’t comment on security incidents but I can confirm that An Post has invested heavily in the most effective security equipment and ongoing training across its national retail network.”

Insp McPolin said that Gardaí are appealing to anyone in the vicinity who may have seen this man pacing up and down outside the post office to contact them.

“To anyone who may have a dash cam or CCTV in the vicinity we ask that they may assist us in locating this individual.”

Insp McPolin described the suspect as 5’7” in height, wearing a blue/green padded jacket, a baseball cap and a scarf over his face.

“Facial recognition is difficult,” Insp McPolin said, “but he was of stockyish build, wearing grey tracksuit pants with black runners and he spoke with a local Cork accent.”

Insp McPolin appealed to anyone with information to contact any local Garda station, Blarney or Gurranabraher, or the Garda Confidential Line 1800 666 111.
