Cork University Hospital announces plan for new €40m radiation oncology centre

Cork University Hospital (CUH) has launched plans for a new state-of-the-art radiation oncology centre.

The new centre will create 17 jobs alongside CUH staff transferred from the hospital and is scheduled to be completed in January 2019.

The Chairperson of the South-South West Hospital Group, Professor Geraldine McCarthy, said: “This new radiation oncology centre will enable CUH to provide a range of augmented cancer treatment services and will lead to improved patient waiting times for critical services.”

The Tánaiste Simon Coveney, who was at the formal announcement today said the new €40m development will help CUH to become the leading cancer hospital in the country, with a wide range of world-class treatment options.

CUH is partnering with The Christie International, the consultancy arm of The Christie specialist cancer hospital in Manchester, the largest single-site cancer centre in Europe, who will help with the development.

The Tánaiste said: “Such an arrangement of sharing experiences and expertise is a welcoming development that brings benefits to all involved.”
