A 34-year-old Cork man was jailed for smashing headstones at Kilcully graveyard in Cork following a lengthy investigation.

THE Kilcully Community Action Group has said it is disappointed more councillors have not contributed money from their ward funds to assist families affected by the extensive damage done at Kilcully graveyard at the start of the year.

An “absolute disgrace” is how Anthony Connolly described the vandalism of a statue on his father’s grave in Kilcully this week. “We were out there two weeks ago, and planted a load of flowers and cleaned it up,” Mr Connolly said.

IMPROVEMENTS to security at Kilcully graveyard are under way following assurances from Cork City Council during a recent local area meeting that additional measures would be taken.

A CCTV monitoring upgrade at St Catherine’s Cemetery in Kilcully looks set to be put in place at a cost of €30,000. It comes following incidents of significant vandalism at the graveyard in recent weeks.

People who have seen the graves of their loved ones vandalised in Kilcully graveyard have heard Cork City Council were meant to take action on the issue of security seven years ago.
