THE East Cork Athletics Division once again rose to the occasion when successfully promoting their annual cross-country championships which have been held annually since 1967.

IN THE world of athletics few could match the achievements and bravery of the late Fanahan McSweeney. Fanahan’s grit, determination and style marked him out as an athlete and a man apart from many of his peers.

THE American Trophy — now known as the John O’Jagoe Memorial Trophy — goes to the Athlete of the Meet at the Cork City Sports and back in 1985 it was certainly hotly contested.

BACK in 1985, the Cork 800 celebrations proved to be a blessing for the increasing number of races then taking place. The once-off ‘Cork 800’ logo on the finishers’ plaque attracted participants.

THE Olympic Year of 1984 promised much for Irish athletics.  The previous August, Eamon Coghlan had won the 5000m at the inaugural World Championships with Regina Joyce seventh in the marathon.

FOR the first time in 13 years, the streets of Cork were empty of runners this Bank Holiday Weekend as the annual marathon and associated events were yet another victim of the Covid-19 pandemic.
