THE Solidarity party has launched their campaign for a NO vote in next week’s plebiscite on whether or not Cork should get a directly elected Mayor.

ENVIRONMENTAL groups across Cork are urging voters to support the plebiscite for a directly-elected mayor. On May 24, the public will vote in the local elections and on whether or not a directly-elected mayor will be introduced to Cork city.

FORMER Lord Mayors of Cork have claimed a directly elected mayor will erode the ceremonial duties of the office and have called for Government clarity on what the role could entail.

BEFORE Dublin gets anywhere near a plebiscite to introduce a directly-elected mayor, the city will have gone through a lengthy public consultation process.
