THERE were ecstatic scenes as Griffin United hound Ash Tree retained her Senior International crown when producing a stunning finish at Ballinascarty on Sunday.

The hounds were slipped at Castleview before swinging right to north Timoleague. At a fast and furious pace they headed for Inchybridge where the hounds were well grouped.

The spectacle of watching the hounds racing down the banks of the Arigideen River was a wonderful experience for all draghunting followers.

From this vantage point they made their route to the finish back to P J Lehane’s land at Castleview.

When the hounds came into view there was at least 10 hounds in with a chance of landing the big prize.

As the hounds came closer to the tape it was evident the winner was getting the better of her rivals as she crossed the tape in the style of a good hound.

As predicted the leading ICDA hounds were in the mix as they completed the remaining five tickets.

Misty trained by Ger McCarthy finished a gallant runner-up with Mossgrove Dessie from the Finbarr and Barry O’Sullivan kennel took third ticket.

The remaining ticketing hounds were Border Lad, Denton Razor and Ballintemple Meg.

Speaking after the draghunt the trainer of Ash Tree John O’Callaghan spoke of his delight.

“It was a great effort by my hound and I would like to dedicate the win to our late stalwart Mickey Joe McCarthy who recently passed away and would have been proud to witness this great occasion,” said John O’Callaghan.

The presentation of prizes took place at Charlie Madden’s bar in Timoleague where the ICDA chairman Sean Hennessy praised the local farming community for their outstanding cooperation in allowing the use of their land.
