COBH RAMBLERS got in the mood for this weekend’s First Division top of-the-table provincial derby away to Waterford at the RSC with a well-deserved EA Sports Cup, first round win over MSL champions, Avondale United at St Colman’s Park last night.
Two cracking second-half goals from Matthew Whelan (below) and Shane Lowth eased the claret-and blues into the next round of the competition and boosted their confidence ahead of Friday night's Munster derby clash on Suirside.
Cobh and big spending Waterford are joint top of the First Division promotion race on 11 points apiece tonight and they go head-to-head this weekend with Cobh heading to the south-east after a 1-0 home win over title rivals UCD last weekend.
Ramblers fielded a shadow squad against Kenny Bruton’s Avondale last night and Cobh boss Stephen Henderson is hopeful of having his club captain and centre-half Chris McCarthy back from a foot injury for the Blues clash.
“We were delighted with last night’s win and it’s another clean sheet for the team and we go to Waterford now on the back of two decent wins over UCD and Avondale and hopefully we can take something out of Friday’s game as well,” said Henderson, who has Cian Kingston pushing for a start as well this weekend.
