KARL SHEPPARD wants Cork City to wrap up the league title as soon as possible so they can focus all their energy on retaining their FAI Cup trophy.
City face relegation-threatened and second from bottom Sligo Rovers at Turner’s Cross in a TV clash tomorrow night that kicks off at the slightly earlier time of 7.30pm.
“There’s no taking your foot off the gas here but the sooner we get our hands on the league trophy, the more we will be able to focus on the FAI Cup competition and trying to retain it.
We have always found it hard against Sligo and tomorrow night will be no different. We have done our home work on them and we go after three more league points as a priority.
"We are in a great position to win the league and we are just three wins away from it at this stage but if Dundalk slip up it will make it that bit easier for us,” reckons Sheppard.
“We are creating the chances and that’s the main thing but we need to convert a few more of them tomorrow night to secure the points. I like playing on the wing and I like playing up front but it’s what John (Caulfield) wants on the day. We have two good strikers in Connor Ellis and Achille Campion and I think John sees us as three good attacking options and you can add Kieran Sadlier to the mix as well,” he added.
“If we get the league wrapped up and we are crowned champions then John will want us to push on and get as high a points tally as we possibly can. He won’t rest and he will want us to try and win every game to the end of the season.
“It’s a big game for Kieran (Sadlier) up against his old club but he was in brilliant form up in Bray and got the winning goal. Hopefully he can go from strength-to-strength in the coming weeks and get a few more goals for us,” he added.
