CORK's newest hurling All-Star Mark Coleman has been picked as the Munster Senior Hurler of the Year.

The Blarney club player had a wonderful campaign in the red jersey and his contribution from the left half-back position was a feature of Cork’s triumphant march through the province last summer.

He will receive his award at the provincial council’s annual banquet on Saturday night at the Fota Island Resort Hotel where he will be joined by another fellow Cork player, minor star Brian Turnbull from Douglas.

He was chosen as the minor award winner to go alongside his selection as the Electric Ireland GAA minor hurler of the year.

Kieran Kingston will pick up the Manager of the Year on the night.

There was great news too for Kanturk, the Duhallow club have been chosen as the Club of the Year in Munster after their exploits in Cork and in the province.

On a more sombre note, the passing of former Cork County Board Chairman, Derry Gowen from Fermoy will be regretted by the GAA fraternity throughout the county.

Mr Gowen was a very popular official who gave very distinguished service to the GAA in Cork. He served in a number of positions on the County Board Executive and was also very involved in his division of Avondhu.
