A heartbroken manager of a heartbroken side, Kinsale manager Michael O’Connor, certainly wore his heart on his sleeve on Sunday afternoon in Parnell Park in Dublin as his brave young Kinsale ladies side lost their All-Ireland Intermediate Football Final by the bare minimum.
“Nothing that you can say to the girls is going to do anything for them right now.
"When they look at this in a few days time, or a week, it’ll take them a while to get over this, that they know that what they have achieved this year in coming back, getting to the junior All-Ireland last year, winning two Munster’s on the trot, two county finals.
"That just goes to show you how those girls have improved, and there is still a lot of improvement in them.
“It has been over 90 years since Kinsale have had a senior team at any level, so it’s a huge achievement to have a senior team in Cork. And there’s nobody better deserves that then those girls in there, with the work they have done. They’re a super bunch of girls.
"They have put in the work. They’ve done it. They’ve got here and they are going to be very disappointed. We are all disappointed. A one point game like that.”
Orla Finn and Sadhbh O’Leary were tearing the Dunboyne defence to pieces in the first half, but their influence waned in the second half.
“Dunboyne certainly cut off the supply to the girls inside, and fair play to them for that.
“It was a tough match. We knew it was going to be a tough match. We knew they were going to be a physically strong team. That was probably what won it for them, their physicality.
“We got off to a slow start again, but we came back well. We went ahead and they came back.
"It was too-ing and fro-ing. It was probably from a spectators point of view a good game of football, but you know it’s tough. It’s tough last year losing and it is twice as tough this year after losing that.
“We let them come back into it in the first half. But you can't fault the girls. We knew that their inside forward line was a serious outfit.
"In the tackle we lost balls from a more physically stronger team. But our girls kept going and they never gave up. They are a great bunch of girls. I know that saying that won't help them too much tonight or over the next few days but they are a great bunch of girls with talent, who stepped up from last year from junior to intermediate.”
