NEMO attacker Paddy Gumley is battling to get fit in time for their All-Ireland club final against Corofin on St Patrick’s Day, but keeper Micheál Aodh Martin has been given the all-clear.

Classy corner-forward Gumley limped out of the semi-final against Slaughtneil with a calf injury he had picked up in training the week before and will rest this week in a bid to recover. Martin was withdrawn in extra-time against the Derry side with a groin strain which won’t impact his availability for the final.

A 35-year-old Cavan native, Gumley excelled in the county championship, picking up a Reardens Club All-Star, and was a key figure in the Munster final defeat of Dr Croke’s. Nemo boss Larry Kavanagh reckons Gumley has a “50-50 chance” of making the clash on March 17.

“It will be similar to the semi-final where we don’t make any decision on Paddy until the last minute,” said Kavanagh. “He might do a bit of kicking next week. But if there is only going to be 20 or 30 minutes in him, you might as well keep that until Saturday as opposed to getting that out of him when seeing what he is like on the Thursday beforehand.

“It is unfortunate Paddy has picked up this injury because he has been going well and the space of Croke Park would suit him.”

Netminder Martin was withdrawn in the second half of extra-time against Slaughtneil.

“We should have taken Micheál off earlier but he didn’t want to come off. He was taking a kick-out, grimaced, and it went 10 yards shorter than it normally would. We, on the line, agreed at that point he was only doing damage to himself, so we brought in Ross [Donovan]. His groin was actually at him before the game but he kept that relatively quiet.”

Due to the snow Nemo trained indoors yesterday but still held their supporters and press event ahead of the All-Ireland.

“We wanted to give them a break for a night or two to come back down from the Slaughtneil win, but these lads won’t accept any sort of a break. If you gave them time off, they’d just go out themselves.

“Last week, they couldn’t do anything. We did a recovery session on Tuesday. The important thing now is we get back out on the pitch soon. What we want is two good sessions on Tuesday and Thursday and an A versus B match on Saturday. If we get that we’ll be grand.”

Meanwhile, Corofin hope their appeal against the red card picked up by Martin Farragher after just 80 seconds of their semi-final win over Moorefield will be heard this week and that the full-forward will be cleared to play in the final.
