SHE’S on top of the world... and doesn’t she deserve it!

Ballincollig superstar of rowing Sanita Puspure showed what she is made of when she took gold at the World Rowing Championships in Plovdiv, Bulgaria.

It was Ireland’s second gold medal of the championships, with Skibbereen’s Paul and Gary O’Donovan taking gold on Saturday in lightweight double sculls, in what they described as their best ever race performance together.

There were scenes of great joy when Sanita was crowned single sculls world champion, dominating the final from start to finish with a stunning display of rowing.

She took the lead early and smashed the race apart with a stunning display. The 2017 and reigning world champion Jeannine Gmelin (Switzerland) was left in Sanita’s wake, and went from being unbeaten all year to being dominated by Sanita. But that was always Sanita’s plan, having told the Evening Echo earlier this year that Jeannine had a target on her back, and Sanita was focusing in on that target.

This Sanita did, sensationally. Sanita’s supporters in Bulgaria cheered, Rowing Ireland cheered, Ballincollig cheered, Cork cheered and Ireland cheered...

Sanita has experienced the heartbreak of coming fourth so often, it was an emotional release to finally make the podium, and Sanita enjoyed her moment being crowned world champion.

A stunning display, congratulations to our world champion.
