(CSN win after a 65 shootout)

THERE was plenty of drama in the Lord Mayor’s Cup B final when a sudden-death 65 from Dylan McSweeney decided matters at Páirc Uí Rinn.

Each school ended up taking nine 65s apiece after the first three efforts couldn’t separate them. Eventually, McSweeney held his nerve to give Coláiste an Spioraid Naoimh the victory.

The Bishopstown side were in trouble midway through the second half when they trailed 0-14 to 0-8, but a few switches, including the move of Cork minor panellist Shane Kingston outfield, swung the balance.

The Ballinora native added a bit of heft to the middle third while Ballinhassig’s Brian Lynch was superb, rattling over 0-6 from play. Evan Cullinane made an impact at the edge of the square, clipping a couple of vital points.

Captain Conor McGoldrick (Éire Óg) contributed at key stages, as did keeper James Hannon. Wing-back Joe Enright hurled up a storm in the latter stages of this decider for fourth- and fifth-year pupils, much to the delight of management team, former Cork hurler Kevin Canty, Brian Walsh, and Ger Greene.

Coláiste Choilm dominated for long spells of the opening half with the wind to their backs, with Ballinora’s Ronan Barrow immense at full-back and Conor O’Leary, Ballincollig, exuding class at number six.

David O’Sullivan was causing major problems at full-forward and finished with 0-9, five from play. Joe Webster-Kelleher and Jack Twohig were dangerous too, but the Ballincollig school didn’t build up enough of an advantage.

CSN got on a roll in the closing 15 minutes, with Lynch in particular doing wreck, though Odhrán O’Driscoll and Seán O’Donoghue came close to snatching it for Coláiste Choilm.

Instead it went to a 65 shootout, though both teams contributed to an entertaining tie.
