ADAM IDAH was the hero for Ireland at Tallaght Stadium yesterday evening as former Dundalk boss Stephen Kenny enjoyed his first competitive victory as Ireland U21 boss.

The Leesider struck twice to get the Euro 2021 campaign off to a flier in an impressive 3-0 win over Luxembourg.

With 4,472 spectators in attendance, Idah’s double and a goal from Neil Farrugia earned the Boys in Green a fully-merited result with Mick McCarthy and his coaching staff watching on in the crowd.

Another Corkonian featured in goal, Liverpool’s Caoimhín Kelleher, while Aaron Drinan was introduced late on.

Idah excelled in the local leagues with College Corinthians before earning a move to Norwich City, who are pushing for promotion in the Championship. Turning 19 this year, Idah has already made a mark for Ireland’s U17 and U18 groups and last season hit a 10-minute hat-trick against Barnsley in the FA Youth Cup.

The result means Ireland go top of a group that also includes Italy, Sweden, Iceland and Armenia, with no other games having been played yet.

The Boys in Green have two fixtures in five days coming up in September, hosting Armenia before travelling to play Sweden.
