Phil Healy wins the Cork Athlete of the Year award

PUTTING the setback of failing to reach the 400m final at last week’s European Indoors behind her, it was a delighted Phil Healy who was yesterday named as the Cork City Sports Athletics Person of the Year for 2018.
“It’s a great to honour to be selected, there’s so much talent here in Cork, so I’m absolutely delighted to receive it,” said the Bandon athlete.
It has been a busy year for the 24-year-old since she was named as the January 2018 winner as she went on to set Irish records over 100m (11.28) and 200m (22.99) during the summer months.
The latter was achieved at the City Sports, which made it extra special.
“It made it a little bit sweeter breaking the national record here in front of the home crowd and that support. It’s a credit to the committee to have such brilliant athletes from other countries and it gets the best out of ourselves.”
After taking a few days off, it’s back to full training with the maim focus being the World University Games in Italy next July.
“I’ll mix the distances with the 200m one of the main aims, after Italy I’ll race the European and Irish circuits for the summer and will be back here in Cork on August 14 for the Cork City Sports.”
