CORK golf stars John Murphy and James Sugrue will represent Ireland in Austria next month.
The Golfing Union of Ireland has selected a six-man squad for the European Amateur Championship at Diamond Country Club, Austria from 26-29 June, which features Kinsale's Murphy and Mallow's Sugrue.
Ireland number one Conor Purcell (Portmarnock) finished sixth at last year's championship and returns for another tilt at the title alongside fellow Walker Cup panellists Murphy (Kinsale), Mark Power (Kilkenny), Caolan Rafferty (Dundalk) and Sugrue (Mallow). Rowan Lester (Hermitage), who tied for seventh in 2018, completes the six-man line-up for the trip to Austria.
Purcell, winner of the Australian Amateur Championship in January, currently leads the Bridgestone Order of Merit and, at number 17, is Ireland's highest ranked player on WAGR -- the world amateur golf rankings. Dundalk's Caolan Rafferty and Kilkenny's Mark Power are also inside the world's top 100.
The European Amateur is a 72-hole stroke play tournament with the top 60 and ties progressing to the final round after the 54-hole cut.
Kevin Murray from Tramore will accompany the squad at Diamond Country Club.
The GUI's High-Performance Programme is supported by Sport Ireland and Sport NI.
