Éire Óg 0-5 Sarsfields 0-2

THE John West Féile Division 1 title remains in Cork but there are new queens on the throne as Éire Óg stopped Sarsfields' bid for four in a row in a tight and exciting final in Castle Road.

Éire Óg had to go to extra time in their semi-final to secure a place in the last two but they showed little signs of tiredness as they worked hard to take a historic first for the Muskerry club, who also represent Cork in the Féile football in two weeks.

Sars playing with the wind led at the interval by two points, a Megan Sheehan free and one form Tara Murphy. Thanks to strong defending they had denied Éire Óg a first-half score despite the efforts of Edel Sheehan, Grainne O’Mahony and Abi Mullins.

Inside four minutes of the restart, the Ovens outfit were level though, courtesy of Orlaith Cremin and the impressive Laoise Murphy. Their defence was solid, driven on by captain Shauna Sheehan and they hit the front with Laoise Murphy showing huge confidence to nail two frees.

Despite putting on a lot of pressure Sars couldn’t breach the Éire Óg defence and with Murphy pointing they opened up a three-point lead.

As the game entered the final minute the Sars pressure paid off as Rachel Roche won a penalty but showing the determination they had shown all through it was stopped superbly on the line by Edel Sheehan who cleared to safety.

With the game entering injury time Sars battled to retain their crown but the Éire Óg rearguard was not going to let them through. They stood firm to ensure history was made.

Amid scenes of jubilation, Camogie President Kathleen Woods presented the trophy to Éire Óg captain Sheehan.
