Kanturk 4-9 Castletownbere 1-10

KANTURK needed four second-half goals to overcome Castletownbere following a tough and uncompromising Cork PIFC first round replay at Ballingeary yesterday afternoon.

The Beara club had fought back to lead 1-9 to 1-7 with less than 10 minutes remaining only to undo all their hard work when letting Kanturk in for three consecutive goals.

First, Ian Walsh was allowed stroll through and find the net from close range and edge his team back in front. Then, inexplicably, Daniel O’Connell got on the end of two successive hand-passing moves and netted two additional goals to make it 4-7 to 1-9.

Castletownbere managed a couple of late points but it was too late. Disappointingly, a hard-hitting game saw Castletownbere’s Dave Fenton plus Kanturk’s Kyrle Holland and John McLoughlin (second yellow card) sent to the line deep into injury-time.

Kanturk led 0-3 to 0-1 at the conclusion of a poor first quarter. Playing within themselves, Castletownbere changed ends two points behind and managed their first score from open play courtesy of a 30th minute James Harrington effort.

Cian Clernon’s well-taken goal edged Kanturk further ahead at the start of the second period but that was their opponents’ cue to move up through the gears and begin to dominate the tie. James Harrington, Gary Murphy (who was repeatedly fouled throughout the game) and Dave Fenton points preceded a superb Reece Dillane goal and Castletownbere looked set for victory.

In control in every sector of the pitch, Castletownbere’s defence were guilty of allowing Kanturk in for three goals in as many minutes. The Beara club toiled hard but were unable to mount a response and it was the returning Lorcan O’Neill who fired over the winners’ final two scores to secure victory.
