Inniscarra 1-15 Éire Óg 0-6

THIS Muskerry derby clash with Éire Óg, in the Cork Senior Camogie Championship, highlighted Inniscarra’s strength.

Inniscarra won the Cork and Munster club camogie titles last year, while Éire Óg are newly-promoted to the senior ranks, after their intermediate success last year.

Éire Óg were spirited, but Inniscarra dominated this game in Cloughduv.

Inniscarra took an early lead, with two points from Niamh Dilworth frees.

These were followed by scores from Ellen Murphy and again from Dilworth. Inniscarra led 0-4 to 0-0 after 10 minutes.

Éire Óg’s first point came after 15 minutes, when Margaret Herlihy slotted over from a free.

Herlihy would add to her tally moments before Inniscarra were awarded a penalty. Cork camogie and ladies’ football legend, Rena Buckley, fired over for a point, from the spot.

In what was a competitive opening half, Inniscarra slotted over three further points and Éire Óg two, as the former led 0-8 to Éire Óg’s 0-4 at half-time.

As the weather conditions worsened, Inniscarra ground down their opponents and began to seize control.

Aileen Sheehan showed great composure to slot over a pair of scores, while Dilworth again demonstrated her shooting range from placed efforts.

Midway through the second-half, Inniscarra got a goal that put the game beyond Éire Óg’s reach.

Ellen Murphy caught the ball well and planted it into the net with a clinical finish.

Herlihy scored again for Éire Óg, from another free. That brought her tally to six points. But it would prove to be a mere consolation, as Inniscarra got late scores through Niamh McCarthy and Sheehan to overcome the first round hurdle without and major obstacles.

Inniscarra now march on towards the third round, which will take place in September.

Éire Óg now go into the backdoor route and round two of the competition.
